Brett Smiley

While looking up information on one of my favorite figures in pop music culture Andrew Loog Oldham, I found this clip on YouTube with him and an artist he was managing in the mid-70s by the name of Brett Smiley.

By the time the clip was over I downloaded his album "Breathlessly Brett." What can I say, the album is great. It is totally fake glam but done with such flaire, it is truly going to one of my all-time favorite albums.

There is also a book by Nina Antonia called "The Prettiest Star: Whatever Happened to Brett Smiley."

Ah, Tosh, you're such a space boy!

Was that audience shot at the end for real? It looked straight out of Monty Python!

was he some sort of jobrtiath?

I think he's very much like Jobrtiath. Just doing his thing too late and at the wrong time. i never heard of him till very recently. And I didn't know Andrew Loog Oldham was involved with Smiley. i am a huge Oldham fan!

But the Brett Smiley album is great - if nothing else a great document of a fantastic failure - and in my book that's not a bad thing.

I am suddenly into shanghai lounge divas, a record with 30s singers.

aki izumi is enka too?

btw, i love the background design of your blog. the dotts. can you do it with basic blogger account?

Izumi sort of reminds me of Dusty Springfield because of her strong voice. Sort of between enka and Japanese pop - but gritty sounding.

I am such an idiot when it comes to designing the blog - so yes the background is one of those things that blog offers.

And Kimley that audience is for real. Hardcore British afternoon people audience. Maybe it was even morning. And yeah Brett Smiley rules!

Oh he's wonderful! The album's pure fun. I've got the book and CD as well.

I have to read the book on Smiley. I hear he will be making new music shortly. I will give it a listen for sure. Also I think Andrew Oldham is an underrated record producer. i love the production on that album!
